Not such a good week for training this week -- busy working on the Dig Debate programme at the Playfair Library as part of the 10th Anniversary of Devolution. Managed the club on Monday and a couple of gym sessions. Hopefully I'll get a run tomorrow night -- then back on track with the Saturday long run. The library is part of Edinburgh University. It is a stunning room and downstairs in a case are Eric Liddell's three Olympic medals -- strange running co-incidence.
Good week this week. The first week of my marathon training programme, ran 5 days -- Men's 10k Sunday; six miles and a weights and abs session in the gym on Tuesday; Club hill Session Wednesday; easy five mile recovery run Thursday and a good 10 miles on Saturday, followed by another session in the gym -- total mileage around 35 miles -- happy with that. Also happy for my pal Louise who won the President's Cup handicap race last week -- a great and much deserved achievement. The photo is a tribute to her and all the Bellas who took part. Don't know who the men's winner was -- but well done to him too !!!
Good decision not to enter the Glasgow Green 5k tomorrow night. Last minute change of shift means I'm going to Edinburgh -- should get back in time for the club night -- but wouldn't it be maddening if I paid £10 and had to miss the race. It does mean however that I must run the Bella 5k to complete the club championship. Good 6 mile recovery run this afternoon, from Greens at Finnieston up past the ski centre and round Bella Park -- followed by a quick weights and abs session -- must do more of those. The pics are some of our holiday photos from Devon.
Great turnout of men in all shapes and sizes for this growing event. Over 3000 this year and once again the inimitable Bryan Burnett on the commentary team. Great support from Bellas all round the course. I think my pal Jane must get the award for the loudest supporter of the day !! Thanks for the hi-5 Jane !!! Particularly nice to see fellow supervet Ian Goudie handing out water -- and lots of encouragement in his usual manner :-) Finished in 43.56.The Garmin averaged me at just under 7 minute miles -- ok coming back from two weeks of holiday. Not spectacular -- not a disaster. Decision now is whether to run the 5k at Glasgow Green on Wednesday -- I need a short race for the Club Championship, or to go to the club -- I've been missing for quite a few weeks -- there is also the fact that I need to get onto my marathon training schedule -- decisions, decisions !!!
What do you do when you're on your holiday and need to do a long run at the weekend -- find a local race !!! Ran the Ruby run -- 13.5 miles between Hatherleigh and Holsworthy in Devon. Fiendishly hilly and a very hot day I ran it as fast hard training run. Averaged 8 minute miles -- wasn't tempted to race it -- apart from getting carried away by the start which I ran a little fast and the finish when I got into a sprint with a sixteen year old -- I won !!! Three runs last week -- doing not too bad, a bit less this week but I should manage 5 or six miles tomorrow.
Time for a new look -- I like it. Still can't fix the picture gadget though. It's worked faultlessly for ages. I've had to revert to an earlier version which works by picking up tags. Doesn't find all my pics though -- strange. Nice pic of me running my leg of the Edinburgh Marathon. Thanks Brendan Moriarty.
Ran the above today in sweltering conditions with a team of Bellas -- Gordon Kerr (leg 1) Clare Blue (leg 3) and top team captain Ian Goudie (leg 4). I ran my 5,4 miles in 38.25ish around 7.03 minute miles. (Pretty accurate course Garmin measured in within .1). Happy with that in the conditions. My heart went out to the full marathon runners -- it was not the ideal day to be running 26.2 miles. Well done each and every one. A good turn out of Bellas across both events.
Special vote of thanks to Ian for getting us all to out starting positions by car -- no mean feat in the traffic conditions of the day -- and of course for the loud and enthusiastic support. Loads of grub at the Deer Park Beefeater a perfect end to a great day. Thanks also to the great Bella support -- I'm sure I saw Scott and Linda, Russell, Al, Brendan and Susie cheering me on my five miles -- apologies if I missed anyone -- it was very hot out there :-) and my brains were boiled as Ian will tell you if you ask him about my chip moment !!! PS Just seen the official leg timings -- the assurance from our pen marshall that the chip timing had stopped for the changeover was rubbish. I wasted a good bit of time fiddling with the velcro strap. If I had thought it mattered I would have been much quicker grrrrr!!!
